What Does High Velocity Fan Mean?

A high velocity fan doesn't just push a lot of air in a short period of time. It is made to project the air long distances, such as down assembly lines or onto sports players who are sitting on a bench. Such fans are typically used where it is not practical to have them set up very close to the target area.

Blowing a "Beam" of Air Across a Space

The ability to blow beams of air over long distances comes in handy in a surprising number of situations. Factories and warehouses use it to keep workers cool while they are standing in lines. Assembly lines and product packing lines are the ones most commonly targeted in these situations.

While there are limitations, such as the worker closest to the fan getting the most air and the one on the end not getting much, the benefits often outweigh these drawbacks. The main benefit is that it reduces or eliminates the need to use expensive air conditioning, which would require cooling the entire space.

A high powered fan is also useful in outdoor situations. As with the indoor ones, it works best when the targeted people will be staying in a line-like formation for a prolonged period. Therefore, they are often used to keep sports players cool while they sit on the bench.

In all of these cases, high velocity drum fans are typically used. They are shaped like drums, and the air comes out of one end. These are usually sized very impressively.

Blowing a Beam of Air Downward

In some situations, it's better for the beam of air to be blown downward onto something or someone. This is common in warehouses with high ceilings, where it would be a costly engineering project to bring a regular output duct down low enough. By installing a barrel fan at the ceiling height, the company can cool down people or products without the extra expense.

Blowing a "Curtain" of Air

Many grocery stores use high velocity air curtains at their doors. This is to prevent cross-ventilation from blowing the stores' air conditioning or heating out of the building. The downdraft effectively stops air transfer while allowing people and things to pass with ease. While some don't like the feeling of air blasting them on the top of the head, it is a minor inconvenience since it takes less than a second to walk through the windy area.

Who Makes High Velocity Fans?

There are several manufacturers. We will highlight Patterson high velocity fans here due to their versatile mounting options. They can be placed on the ground, like many drum fans, and they can also be hung by their top-mounted bracket. This company also makes a high velocity fan for cooling the inside of a semi-trailer. Such cooling is needed during loading and unloading, when workers would otherwise be overwhelmed by the heat that accumulates in such metal structures.
