Whole House Fans

Want a smarter, cheaper way to cool your home? A whole house fan is your secret weapon against high cooling costs. Mounted in your ceiling, it pulls fresh, cool air in through open windows and forces hot, stale air out through your attic vents - flushing your home's entire air volume rather than recirculating the same tired air like an air conditioner does. The result is quiet operation, noticeably fresher air, and a dramatic drop in your energy bills, with savings of up to 90% compared to running central AC. Our selection includes trusted brands like QuietCool and Triangle, with options sized for every home.

How a Whole House Fan Works

Think of it as a high-powered exhaust fan for your entire house. You crack a few windows, switch on the fan, and it draws cool outdoor air through your living space while pushing hot indoor air up into the attic and out through the roof vents. Heat naturally rises and gets trapped upstairs by the end of a hot day; the fan creates negative pressure that pulls that trapped heat out in minutes. A properly sized unit exchanges all the air in your home every 3 to 4 minutes, which is why second-floor bedrooms see the biggest comfort improvement.

How Much Can You Save?

Energy savings are the headline benefit - and they're significant. The U.S. Department of Energy notes that a whole house fan can reduce cooling costs by 50–90%. The reason is the enormous gap in power draw: a modern whole house fan uses roughly 200–700 watts, while a central air conditioner pulls 3,500 watts or more. Over an eight-hour run, that's about 0.45 kWh versus 28 kWh.

Across a summer season, a typical 2,000 sq. ft. home can save roughly $180–$300 by replacing several daily AC cycles with fan cooling. Two additional savings often go overlooked:

  • Longer AC lifespan. Every hour your fan runs is an hour your compressor doesn't, reducing wear and cutting the frequency of expensive repairs or replacement.
  • Utility rebates. Many local utilities offer rebates for qualifying, energy-efficient cooling installations, shortening your payback period further.

Beyond the Energy Bill

  • Fast cooling. Whole house fans drop indoor temperatures within minutes — far faster than an AC ramps up. Running one on low overnight cools your home's surfaces so it stays comfortable into the next day.
  • Fresher indoor air. Constant air exchange clears out cooking odors, smoke, pet dander, paint fumes, and other airborne irritants. That matters because indoor air often carries more pollutants than the air outside.
  • Eco-friendly. They use a fraction of the electricity of AC and no refrigerants.
  • Low maintenance, long life. With only light yearly upkeep — no coils, filters, or condensate drains - a quality whole house fan can run for decades.

The Best Time to Run Your Whole House Fan

The most efficient time to use a whole house fan is whenever the outside air is cooler than the inside air: early morning, evening, and overnight. Open your windows, turn the fan on, and your home fills with clean, cool air in minutes. Mild spring and fall days — when AC feels like overkill - are ideal too. During the hottest hours, generally 1 to 5 p.m., you'll typically switch the fan off and keep windows closed.

Which Size Do You Need?

Getting the size right is what separates effective, quiet cooling from a fan that's noisy or underpowered. A whole house fan is really a two-part system: the fan itself, and the attic venting that lets the air escape.

Fan sizing (CFM). A reliable rule of thumb is to multiply your home's conditioned square footage by 2 to 3 to find your target airflow in cubic feet per minute. So a 2,000 sq. ft. home generally needs about 4,000–5,000 CFM. Higher ceilings need proportionally more airflow, since the math is really about air volume, not just floor area.

Attic venting. Your attic vents are the exhaust, and they must keep up with the fan. Plan on at least 1 square foot of net free vent area for every 750 CFM — a 4,000 CFM fan needs about 5.3 sq. ft. of venting, and a 6,000 CFM fan needs about 8 sq. ft. Inadequate venting reduces performance and can even cause furnace backdraft, so it's worth verifying before you buy.

Don't worry about the math - our exhaust fan CFM calculator chart helps you size airflow requirements before you start comparing models, and every model includes clear sizing and installation guidance.

The Brands We Carry

We stock the two most trusted names in whole house ventilation:

  • QuietCool - energy-saving and classic series, from compact single-speed units (the ES-1500 at ~1,468 CFM) up to powerful two-speed models (the ES-7000 at ~6,878 CFM). Many QuietCool energy-saver models draw about as little power as a single light bulb and earn top California Energy Commission ratings for CFM per watt.
  • Triangle - belt-drive whole house fans from 24 to 48 inches, rated to cool homes from 800 up to 4,000 sq. ft.
